" A health letter from your doctor" (cont'd)
(Side Article for 'The Common Cold')
When To Call the Doctor
Most colds do not require a doctor's
attention. But don't hesitate to call if the cold sufferer:
- tends to get bronchitis, pneumonia, or ear infections
- is elderly -- especially if in a hospital or nursing home
- has a weakened immune defense system (from disease or from
chemotherapy cancer treatment)
- has a cold for longer than 10 days
- has symptoms that indicate the infection may have spread beyond the
nose and throat.
The call should be made immediately if
symptoms include: earache; pain in the face or forehead; persistent sore
throat, hoarseness, wheeziness, shortness of breath, and dry, painful cough;
or a temperature over 102ºF.
